Like Father, Like Son

Last night Carson surprised us again with something not so wonderful. Carson loves to take medicine. I thought that that was good when he was sick about a week ago. I didn't have to force it down him. Plus he would remind me that he needed his medicine. He is just now over his little cold he had. Last night while I was watching tv and Jordan was on the computer, he came to Jordan with an empty bottle of Triaminic and said, "Carson drank it all gone daddy." We totally flipped out. The medicine was out because he had been sick and had been taking it up until just a few days ago. It was on top of the microwave, but he managed to climb and get it. He then managed to open the "child proof" top. I figured there was about just under a half of bottle of medicine left in there. Carson was sticky with medicine all over him so we knew he didn't drink all of it. We called the Poison Control number in the phone book. It just rang and rang and rang. Then we called the pediatrician and an on call nurse called us back. She gave us the local Poison Control's number. While Jordan dialed one number, I dialed the other on the cell phone. The local Poison Control was busy for 30 minutes. The other Poison Control number from the phone book just rang and rang and rang for 30 minutes. We called the nurse again. She said to call the pharmacist at Walgreens (the only 24 hour pharmacy in town) to see what the active ingredients do to a 2 and a half year old. At this point it is 10:30 at night. He said it would only increase his heart rate and make him have a lot of energy. He told us that we should be grateful it wasn't a cough medicine (it was Chest and Nasal Congestion). A cough suppressant would have worked like a sedative which would have put him out and been scary. He reassured us that he would probably be fine. When we called the nurse back (at her request) she said that she felt much better about the situation. She had told us before that if we did take him to the ER, they would assume he drank the whole bottle and treat him for that. We sat this one out at home rather than the ER and Carson was fine. Holy moly! Another exciting day in the Gold home.

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas...

I love this time of year! Note that it is still in the 70s and even 80s which does not make it feel like Christmas is coming at all. However, this is the time of year that my mom did most of her baking when we were growing up. She was always baking for people as a random act of kindness through out the year. At Christmas though, everyone got cookies...sometimes even her own kids. We always laugh about it because she was always baking for everyone else. We had to run and steal a cookie or two when they first came out of the oven if we were going to get a cookie. She was always worried about baking for everyone else. We always gave her a hard time about it and still do. Now that I'm married and have my own little family, my name has made it to "the list". I now get a big plate of cookies, while Chance (who still lives with mom) has to run and grab a hot one if he wants a cookie. My mom is like the most amazing woman in the world...and the best baker as well. The smell of freshly baked cookies always reminds me of Christmas!

Pa Pa

Last night Jordan was messing with the rocking chair and out fell a pacifier. We laughed and decided to see if Carson remembered his "pa pa". We asked him what it was. He said he didn't know. We told him it was his old pa pa. We made him put it in his mouth for old time's sake. He looked so silly.
Look at his look in this picture. LOL. It just made me think how much Carson has grown in the last year. He doesn't have his pa pa, he talks nonstop (I don't know who he gets that from), he's potty trained, he can count, and he can say his ABCs. He is just a sponge right now. It is so fun! He LOVES Christmas lights, Santa, wrapping presents, and putting presents under the tree. I can't even begin to think about what he'll be like this time next year.

Missionary Dinner

Tomorrow I am having the missionaries over. I used to be good at feeding them every Thursday, but with student teaching I quit doing that. So it has been forever since we've fed them. I'm making lasagna, salad (always makes everything go further), corn (my psycho family always has to have corn with lasagna, spaghetti, ziti, etc.), French bread, and ice cream dessert. The reason I wanted to post about feeding the missionaries tomorrow is to post a great recipe. I love making ice cream dessert because it takes 5 minutes to make and does not tie up your oven like brownies, cakes, or cookies. It is also very kid friendly. Carson helped me make it tonight.

Ice Cream Dessert

Ingredients:
12 ice cream sandwiches
8 oz. cool whip
caramel sauce for drizzling
chocolate syrup for drizzling
heath bar pieces or mini chocolate chips

Directions:

Unwrap ice cream sandwiches. Break them apart and put into 9 x 13 pan (or whatever size you'd like). After all ice cream sandwiches are broken up, flatten with hands to make an even surface.

Dollop the cool whip on top. Spread evenly. Drizzle chocolate syrup and caramel.

Top with heath bar pieces or mini chocolate chips. Freeze for 5 + hours.

I usually make mine the night before and let it freeze overnight. I pull it out of the freezer about 5-10 minutes before dessert time. This way it's easier to cut. It is so great because my dessert is done and I don't have to worry about it tomorrow.

FHE Exchange

I recently participated in a FHE Exchange via a Yahoo Group. The ladies did an amazing job with their lessons. We each created one lesson each. We made 13 copies of our lesson (12 for the other ladies and one for us). It took longer for the exchange to take place than originally thought because some people didn't send theirs on time or at all. We did end up with 10 other lessons. All of the lessons were on The Book of Mormon. Instead of taking a million pictures of each lesson, I thought I'd post pictures of them as we get to each one as a family. Tonight's lesson is on the Stripling Warriors. I'm so excited! I can't wait!
